Peru’s only iron ore producer, Shougang Hierro Peru, said in a document filing at the country’s securities exchange commission it is currently considering building a port in the district of Marcona, Peru.

Although further details about the initiative were not provided, Shougang Hierro Peru said it would develop the project under a consortium, in which it would have other “interested companies.”

Media reports said Shougang Hierro Peru would start soliciting the building of the port by April this year, as part of the company’s $500 million expansion plans for its Marcona complex. The company did not provide investment figures for the port.
