In January this year, the unemployment rate of the 34 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries remained stable at 5.3 percent compared to December, according to new figures published by the OECD. The number of unemployed in the OECD region was 34 million people in the same month, increasing for the fourth consecutive month.
In January, the unemployment rate for the euro area was at 7.8 percent, also stable month on month. In the given month, the largest decline in the unemployment rate was observed in Spain with a 0.2 percentage point decrease. Outside Europe, the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 3.4 percent in Mexico. It increased by 0.6 percentage points in South Korea to 4.4 percent, by 0.2 percentage points in Canada to 5.8 percent, by 0.1 percentage point in Japan to 2.5 percent, and by the same margin in the US to four percent.
