OECD unemployment rate stable at 5.2 percent in December

In December last year, the unemployment rate of the 34 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries remained stable at 5.2 percent compared to November, three percentage points less than the January 2013 peak, according to new figures published by the OECD. The number of unemployed in the OECD region was 33.4 million people in the same month.

In December, the unemployment rate for the euro area was at 7.9 percent, also stable month on month. In the given month, the largest decline in the unemployment rate was observed in Italy with a 0.2 percentage point  decrease. Outside Europe, the unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage point to 2.4 percent in Japan, while it was stable in Canada at 5.6 percent and South Korea at 3.8 percent. The unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points in Israel to 4.3 percent and by the same margin in the United States to 3.9 percent, and by 0.3 percentage points in Mexico to 3.6 percent.
