Indian state-owned steelmaker Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on Tuesday, October 4, commenced commercial production at its new Steel Processing Unit (SPU) located in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, a company statement has said.

The SPU will produce various grades of thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bars, including earthquake-resistant bars, the statement said. The SPU has the capacity to produce 100,000 mt of TMT bars annually and raw material, i.e., billets, will be sourced from various SAIL steel mills across the country.

The SPU is part of SAIL’s plans to locate production facilities where the company does not have integrated steel mills and have production facilities closer to rural markets in particular across India.
