India’s Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) will construct a 1.2 million mt per year capacity steel rail and heavy structural mill at its Angul steel mill in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, a company statement said on Thursday, April 13.

On completion of the project, JSPL’s total steel rail making capacity will increase to 2.2 million mt per year together with its existing 1 million mt capacity at its Raigarh steel mill in central state of Chhattisgarh, the company said.

JSPL has developed speciality rails like 1175 HT, R350 HT, asymmetric rails, and 1080 head hardened rails at its existing rail mill at n Raigarh. These rails are an import substitution product, required for heavy axle loads of more than 25 mt, and are primarily used by various urban metro rail systems, high-speed dedicated rail freight corridors, and bullet train projects.

The company has not disclosed the investment details required for the construction of the steel rail mill at Angul.
