Indian parliamentarians part of the Standing Committee on Commerce have sought a complete review of existing antidumping duties on steel imports from China, government officials said on Tuesday, July 31.

The officials said that the Standing Committee of Parliament on the Ministry of Commerce in a report submitted observed that, while over 75 percent of steel product imports from China were covered under antidumping duties, the continued rise in imports of steel (3.5 percent during 2017-18 and 11 percent during May 2018) warranted a review of import protection measures.

However, he declined to elaborate on the details or on the volume of imports beyond which such proposed safeguard duties will be imposed by the government.

When contacted, an official at the Ministry of Steel said that the government is ready to impose fresh safeguard duties if steel imports continued to rise beyond a certain volume.
