Steelmaker Gerdau S.A. announced Tuesday that it is changing the names of its North American subsidiaries. Gerdau Ameristeel is dropping the "Ameristeel" from its name and will now be known as Gerdau Long Steel North America. Gerdau Macsteel is now Gerdau Special Steel North America.
Gerdau Ameristeel was formed when a subsidiary of Brazil-based Gerdau acquired steelmaker Ameristeel in 2002.
Announcement of the change came on the 110-year anniversary of the establishment of Gerdau, which Gerdau executives saw as an opportunity to "consolidate the image of the Gerdau brand."
