Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) was ordered to remove a growing slag pile near its Presidente Prudente mill, in the city of Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro state, according to several media reports.

CSN will face a daily BRL 20,000 fine until it removes all slag accumulated in Volta Redonda. US-based company Harsco will also face a daily BRL 5,000 fine. The fines will be effective as soon as both companies are officially notified.

CSN’s slag pile is reportedly reaching 20 meters (65.6 feet), much higher than the 4-meter (13.1 feet) limit set for the material, local media O Dia said.
