UK-based steelmaker British Steel may terminate plans to build an electric arc furnace at its Teesside plant and may instead build two electric arc furnaces at its Scunthorpe plant, ending hopes for hundreds of jobs in the north of England, according to media reports. The company has made no final decisions yet.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, the company was planning to build two electric arc furnaces worth £1.25 billion in total, one each at its Scunthorpe and Teesside plants, to decarbonize its operations.

In addition, the company is currently operating both of its blast furnaces at the Scunthorpe plant, having restarted the Queen Anne furnace which had been shut down due to management error, according to media reports.
