Brazilian steel exports down 16 percent in Jan-Oct

According to the Brazil Steel Institute (IABr), Brazilian crude steel production in the first 10 months of the current year amounted to 28.86 million metric tons, 1.1 percent lower year on year. In the same period, Brazilian rolled steel output increased by 2.1 percent to 22.09 million metric tons, including 12.54 million metric tons of flat products - up 1.4 percent, and 9.56 million metric tons of long products - up three percent, all on year-on-year basis.
 
Meanwhile, Brazilian steelmakers produced 3.02 million metric tons of crude steel in October of the current year, up 1.51 percent from September and down 2.8 percent year on year. Brazil's rolled steel product output totaled 2.34 million mt in October, increasing by 7.6 percent month on month and up 4.3 percent year on year. Of this total, the country's flat steel output stood at 1.35 million mt, increasing by 9.63 month on month and up 3.2 percent year on year, while Brazil's long steel output amounted to 987,500 metric tons, rising by 3.74 percent month on month and up 5.8 percent compared to October 2012.


Brazilian domestic steel sales rose by 9.4 percent year on year in October this year to 2 million metric tons, while domestic sales in the first 10 months totaled 19.33 million metric tons, increasing by 5.6 percent year on year. 

Brazil's exports of steel products in October amounted to 750,700 metric tons, falling by 1.4 percent, and worth US$511.40 million, down 10.8 percent, both compared to October 2012. Steel product exports in the first 10 months this year totaled 6.87 million mt, worth US$4.71 billion, with decreases of 16 percent in volume and 21.2 percent in value compared to the corresponding period of 2012.
 
Meanwhile, the country's steel import volume in October increased by 57.3 percent year on year to 413,100 metric tons (US$415.60 million), while total steel imports in the first 10 months amounted to 3.17 million metric tons (US$3.66 billion), representing a 2.1 percent decrease from the same period last year.
