During the week ending June 24, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have mostly increased, with shipbuilding plate prices softening very slightly, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, Chinese steelmakers’ profit margins have shrunk due to the rises seen in iron ore prices. However, domestic steel plate producers have not begun maintenance works yet and so the pressure from the supply side is still significant. Most traders have indicated that their transaction activities are slack. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will decline slightly in the coming week.
