Chinese domestic steel plate prices mostly edge down

During the week ending January 7, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have mostly edged down, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been better than previous week, now at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.

During the given week, more steel plate supplies have been arriving in the domestic market, exerting negative pressure on prices. However, HRC futures prices at Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) have rebounded in the latter part of the week, positively influencing the steel plate market. At the same time, major domestic steelmaker Baosteel has issued its ex-works prices for February and March delivery, keeping its steel plate prices stable for February, while raising them by RMB 50/mt ($7.3/mt) for March, which will bolster steel plate prices in the domestic market. It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will move sideways in the coming week.
