Chinese domestic medium plate prices soften

Monday, 18 February 2019 17:31:50 (GMT+3)   |   Shanghai

During the week ending February 18, average prices of common carbon medium plate and low alloy medium plate in the Chinese domestic market have softened, though shipbuilding plate prices have increased, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.

During the given week, demand has not shown any improvement as most players have not returned to the market yet after the recent holiday. The effect of the rises in import iron ore prices due to the dam collapse in Brazil has faded, resulting in decreases in common carbon and low alloy steel plate prices. Ferrous metal futures prices were at high levels at the very beginning of the given week, but declined steadily during the latter part of the given week, affecting the steel plate market. However, demand will likely improve after the Lantern Festival (February 19). It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will rise slightly in the coming week.
