During the week ending March 25, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have edged up slightly for common carbon medium plate and shipbuilding plate, though softening very slightly for low alloy medium plate, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, HRC futures prices at Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) moved sideways on most trading days, but have edged down by 1.08 percent on March 25, impacting the steel plate market. The order volumes received by steel plate producers in the Shanghai market have been lower than in other regions, negatively the affecting steel plate market. The current high cost of steel plate provides support for steel prices, though at the same time demand for steel plate has weakened. Traders are mostly holding a wait-and-see stance to gain a clearer picture of the likely trend of the market. It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will move sideways in the coming week.
