During the week ending March 5, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have increased, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has improved compared to the previous week and is currently at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
At the beginning of the given week, due to big rises in prices of semi-finished steel and ferrous metals futures, suppliers bullish on the prospects for the steel plate price trend and increased their steel plate offer prices. However, demand remained slack as many market participants were still on holiday ahead of the Lantern Festival (March 2). With prices having recorded rapid rises, some traders may sell previously-bought low-cost products in order to bring in cash. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market may edge up slightly in the coming week, though some downticks could also be seen in prices.
