World crude steel output down by 5.2 percent in January-May

Global crude steel production in May this year increased by 8.5 percent month on month and fell by 8.7 percent year on year to 148.8 million metric tons, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

In the January-May period of this year, global crude steel production decreased to 728.72 million mt, down 5.2 percent year on year.

In May this year, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 113.45 million mt, falling by 3.3 percent, with 92.27 million mt produced by China, up 4.2 percent, 5.92 million mt produced by Japan, decreasing by 31.8 percent, 5.77 million mt produced by India, declining by 39.1 percent, and 5.39 million mt produced by South Korea, down by 14.1 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.

EU-28 countries produced 10.48 million mt of crude steel in May, down by 26.8 percent year on year. In the given month, Germany's output was 2.85 million mt, falling by 18.9 percent year on year, Italy's crude steel output was 1.25 million mt, decreasing by 43.6 percent year on year, and France's crude steel output amounted to 784,000 mt, declining by 36.5 percent year on year.

Turkey produced 2.27 million metric tons of crude steel in May, with a 25.8 percent decrease from the same month of last year. Iran's crude steel production in May amounted to 2.35 million mt, up by 8.9 percent year on year. The CIS registered a crude steel output of 8.17 million mt, falling by 7.6 on year-on-year basis, with Russia producing 6 million mt, decreasing by 4.8 percent, and Ukraine producing 1.64 million mt, down by 10.4 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In North America in May, crude steel output totaled 7.11 million mt, declining by 31 percent, with the US producing 4.79 million mt, falling by 36.6 percent, and Mexico producing 1.45 million mt, down by 13.2 percent, all on year-on-year basis. Crude steel output in South America in May amounted to 2.68 million mt, decreasing by 25.8 percent from May 2019, with Brazil's output totaling 2.19 million mt, down by 22.6 percent year on year.
