US slab imports up 94.6 percent in September

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of slab totaled 402,728 mt in September 2023, up 94.6 percent from August and up 117.3 percent from September 2022 levels. By value, slab imports totaled $257.2 million in September 2023, compared to $133.6 million in August and $146.2 million in September 2022.

The US imported the most slab from Brazil in September, with 298,413 mt, compared to 104,455 mt in August and 108,905 mt in September 2022. Other top sources of imported slab in September include Mexico, with 80,769 mt; and Canada, with 23,014 mt.
