US slab imports down 34.0 percent in August

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of slab totaled 206,931 mt in August 2023, down 34.0 percent from July but down 25.3 percent from August 2022 levels. By value, slab imports totaled $133.6 million in August 2023, compared to $237.9 million in July and $213.4 million in August 2022.

The US imported the most slab from Brazil in August, with 104,455 mt, compared to 225,098 mt in July and 121,764 mt in August 2022. Other top sources of imported slab in August include Mexico, with 71,683 mt; and Canada, with 30,793 mt.
