US slab imports down 32.1 percent in July

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of slab totaled 313,547 mt in July 2023, down 32.1 percent from June but up 14.6 percent from July 2022 levels. By value, slab imports totaled $237.9 million in July 2023, compared to $376.4 million in June and $330.7 million in July 2022.

The US imported the most slab from Brazil in July, with 225,098 mt, compared to 279,918 mt in June and 177,724 mt in July 2022. Other top sources of imported slab in July include Mexico, with 47,661 mt; Canada, with 27,537 mt; and Japan, with 13,251 mt.
