US rebar imports rise 2.6 percent in December

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of rebar totaled 129,158 mt in December, up 2.6 percent from November and up 12.8 percent from December 2015 levels. By value, rebar imports totaled $49.5 million in December 2016, compared to $51.1 million in the previous month and $46.5 million in the same month last year.
 
The US imported the most rebar from Turkey in December, with 100,453 mt, compared to 100,635 mt in November and 98,614 mt in December 2015. Other top sources of imported rebar in December include Russia, with 14,853 mt; Japan, with 6,261 mt; India, with 5,080 mt; and Dominican Republic, with 1,560 mt.
 
For the full-year 2016, rebar imports to the US totaled 1,912,649 mt, up 5.1 percent from 2015. By value, US rebar imports in 2016 totaled $734.3 million, compared to $836.5 million in 2015.
