Union workers strike at ArcelorMittal plant in Mexico

On Saturday 3,500 unionized workers at ArcelorMittal Lázaro Cárdenas, located in Mexico's state of Michoacan, started a strike after the union's proposals for a new labor contract were rejected. The mill employs a total of 7,000.

The company says it does not expect its customers will be impacted and that it will continue to fulfill all orders it has booked.

The union says the strike is mainly over wage increases and it is willing to continue talks.

ArcelorMittal acquired the Lázaro Cárdenas mill in 2006. Lázaro Cárdenas is Mexico's largest steel producer and slab exporter. The plant has an integrated steelmaking capacity of four million tons per year.
