The United Auto Workers union has commenced a strike against the three largest auto producers in the US: General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis.

After failing to agree on a new contract late Thursday, workers at three Midwest auto plants walked off the job under a new strike strategy the UAW calls a “stand up strike,” which means for now less than 9 percent of the UAW’s membership at the three companies is on strike.

Additional locations could be affected by the strike depending on how negotiations progress between the union and the automakers. In media reports, union officials said they are negotiating with all three automakers at once, another new strategy.

The locations currently affected by the strike include the GM plant in Wentzville, Missouri; the Stellantis plant in Toledo, Ohio; and part of the Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan.
