Germany-based steelmaker Thyssenkrupp has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with German automotive producer Mercedes-Benz, expanding their existing cooperation to include carbon-reduced steel.

Accordingly, Mercedes-Benz will use carbon-reduced steel in its new passenger cars from the second half of 2026 in line with its aims to produce carbon-neutral passenger cars. In addition, the automotive producer will also receive about 50,000 mt of green steel from Sweden-based H2 Green Steel, as SteelOrbis previously reported.

Steel production at Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe is planned to be completely carbon-neutral by 2045 at the latest.
