Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it has signed a comprehensive service and modernization contract with Iran-based Mahshahr Pipe Mill Company (MPM) for its large-diameter pipe mill in Khuzestan Province in Iran.

SMS stated that the service and modernization concept is tailored to MPM’s specific plant parameters and requirements and includes the overhaul of the complete pipe welding equipment and the replacement of X-ray testing units at the large-diameter pipe mill. With the overhaul of the welding equipment, energy savings of up to 30 percent can be achieved compared to older welding techniques and also productivity can be increased by up to 20 percent. With the replacement of the X-ray testing units, MPM aims to ensure maximum pipe quality while boosting the output capacity of the overall plant.

Meanwhile, as part of the technical assistance agreement, the entire large-diameter pipe mill in Khuzestan will be examined for faults and disruptions, which will be eliminated successively. In addition, SMS Group’s Technical Service team will be assisting MPM with the deployment of an effective maintenance organization, aimed at improving preventive maintenance measures to improve the availability of the plant and the quality of the finished products in the long run.
