Siemens reports success at POSCO's Finex plant

Siemens Metals Technologies has announced that, during the initial six months of operations at the first commercial Finex technology-based plant at South Korean steelmaker POSCO's Pohang Works, more than 650,000 tons of hot metal were tapped and a nominal melting rate of 180 tons per hour was achieved within several weeks of the start-up in late 2006.

Siemens has also stated that the quality of the hot metal fully satisfied the requirements for subsequent processing at POSCO's steel works right from the start of production.

The Finex technology, jointly developed by POSCO and Siemens Metal Technologies, allows for the use of low-cost iron ore fines and non-coking coal and reduces hot metal production costs by approximately 15 percent compared with the blast furnace method.
