According to media reports, Mexican economy secretary Graciela Marquez Colin has announced that Mexican government has extended the existing 15 percent import tariff imposed on steel products until 2024. The import tariff was first imposed in 2015 to protect the domestic steel industry from steel imports, especially from China, and has been temporarily renewed every six months, as previously reported by SteelOrbis.

Economy secretary Marquez Colin said that there will be no further temporary renewal of the steel safeguard duty, which will remain in force until August 31, 2024.

The 15 percent import duty has been and will be imposed on imports of hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil, heavy plate, pipe, wire rod and steel section.
