In an attempt to protect its domestic steel industry from the steel imports from other countries, especially from China, Mexico’s economy secretariat said on Tuesday it will temporarily apply a 15 percent imports tariff for several steel products.

The new tariff will be applied for imports of slab, CRC, HRC, heavy plate and wire rod.

According to the government, the aliquot will be increased to 15 percent and will last for a period of six months. The tariff is valid not only for Chinese steel exporters, but also for imports of steel coming from other countries, which don’t have trade agreements with Mexico.
