Maanshan Iron and Steel Group (Magang) has inked an agreement with the Headquarters of West-East Gas Transmission Project Phase II in Beijing in order to supply 1,000 mt of line pipe steel.

The second phase natural gas line of China's West-East Gas Transmission Project starts from Huo'erguosi (Xinjiang) in the west and ends in Shanghai and Guangxi Nanning in the east. The whole line extends over 7,000 kilometers. The project in question is expected to use nearly 4 million mt of steel and the diameter of trunk pipes is designed to reach 1,219 mm. Unlike the first phase west-east gas line, the second main line will entirely use X80 grade sheets and coils. It is expected to use 2.24 million mt of sheets and coils, most of which are above 18.4 mm for thickness. The pipe supply is expected to start in December 2007 and the project is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Magang conducted its technical research on the production of X80 grade line pipe steel when the trial production started on its new 2250 mm hot rolling line in May 2007. After two months, Magang successfully developed 18.4 mm thickness pipeline coils which can fully comply with the national technical standard, thus becoming one of the few steel plants which can produce X80 grade pipeline steel independently.

X80 grade pipeline steel is characterized with high strength and toughness, plus excellent properties in resisting corrosion and temperature difference.
