Italian plantmaker Danieli Technologies has reported that Oman-based steelmaker Jindal Steel Sohar has established a new benchmark in monthly steelmaking output at its Oman plant, with liquid steel production reaching 235,112 mt. Based on this performance, the facility’s annualized steel output now exceeds 2.5 million mt.

The plantmaker emphasized that the record performance followed a recent technological upgrade of the 220-ton electric arc furnace, originally supplied and commissioned by Danieli in 2014. The integration of Danieli’s Q-MELT adaptive process control system has enabled optimized furnace operation, contributing to an equipment availability rate of 96.5 percent, even when scheduled shutdowns and process-related delays are taken into account.

According to Danieli, the furnace is currently operated with a carefully optimized metallic charge mix, consisting of 61 percent hot DRI, 37 percent cold DRI, and two percent hot briquetted iron (HBI). Under these conditions, the furnace achieves a productivity level of 324 mt per hour, while maintaining a specific electrical energy consumption of 493 kWh per metric ton.
