Japan’s scrap exports up 64.3 percent in January-May

According to statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Finance, Japan's ferrous scrap exports totaled 692,507 metric tons in May this year, decreasing by 3.15 percent month on month and up 155 percent compared to May 2011.

In May of the current year, Japan's ferrous scrap exports to South Korea decreased by 4.6 percent month on month to 378,840 metric tons, while a rise of 184 percent was registered compared to May 2011. China imported 272,832 metric tons from Japan in May this year, declining by 7.6 percent month on month and up 105 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in the first five months of this year, Japan's scrap exports amounted to 3.35 million metric tons, increasing by 64.3 percent year on year.

In the first five months of the year, Japanese scrap exports to South Korea totaled 1.98 million metric tons, while exports to China amounted to 1.25 million metric tons, increasing by 72.6 percent and up 45.8 percent respectively, both compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
