India’s Tata Steel inks pact with BPCL to source LNG for ferroalloys plant in Odisha

Monday, 15 May 2023 14:53:47 (GMT+3)   |   Kolkata

India’s Tata Steel Limited has entered into an agreement with government-run oil refiner and marketer Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to source liquefied natural gas (LNG) for its ferroalloys plant at Jajapur, Odisha, operated through wholly-owned subsidiary Tata Steel Mining Limited, a Tata Steel statement said on Monday, May 15.

The company said that, not only would the agreement ensure higher energy security, it will enable the ferroalloy plant to reduce its carbon footprint using cleaner fuel like LNG instead of furnace oil.

It said that this is in line with Tata Steel’s overall effort to reduce its carbon footprint from all its operations in Odisha state as it had earlier concluded a similar agreement with natural gas transporter and infrastructure provider government-run GAIL Limited to source natural gas for its other ferroalloy plant at Athgarh, also located in Odisha, and replace the use of furnace oil.
