Earlier this week, US Steel announced it would be laying off an undisclosed number of non-union employees at its Granite City works. In a statement, company spokesperson Amanda Malkowski said the layoffs were due to “challenging market conditions.”

According to news reports, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. previously said that US Steel would need to retain 3,875 employees in Indiana, in return for receiving $10M in tax incentives for 10 years. The incentive was given due to the steelmaker’s $750M upgrade at its Gary Works plant.

News reports indicate that the state is monitoring whether US Steel is maintaining the required employee threshold.
