India working on mechanism to increase coking coal blending for steel mills

The Indian government is planning a mechanism to increase the blending of coking coal for steel mills from 12 percent at present to levels of 30-35 percent, in order to reduce import dependency for the steelmaking input, Indian coal minister G Kishan Reddy said in a statement on Tuesday, July 30.

The minister said that, in addition, the government has launched “Mission Coking Coal’ aiming to ramp up domestic production to 140 million mt by 2030. He said that a new sub-sector has also been created named the ‘steel using coking coal through washery developer operator (WDO)’ route wherein linkages will be offered for long-term coal supplies from identified mines to steel mills throughout the contract period, boosting domestic coal consumption by steel companies.
