France-based machine industry company Fives Group has announced that it is jointly developing a project called TWINGHY with Spain-based long steel producer Celsa Group to demonstrate an optimized heat transfer process based on hybrid (natural gas-hydrogen) burners in reheating furnaces.

The project will allow the progressive decarbonization of the reheating process through an increase of hydrogen in combination with oxygen, by monitoring and controlling it through a digital twin technology. The digital twin technology will analyze the impact of different fuel blends, energy efficiency and reliability.

Testing will take place on the existing walking beam furnace installed by Fives at Celsa’s Barcelona plant in 2009. The TWINGHY project with funding amounting to €4.28 million is scheduled to end on July 31, 2027.
