February housing starts up 6.2 percent in Canada

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced Tuesday that the seasonally adjusted rate of housing starts in Canada was 181,900 units in February, up 6.2 percent from the 170,600 units in January 2011.

The most significant monthly increases came from urban housing starts. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of urban starts rose by 9.4 percent to 161,000 units from January to February, as urban multiple starts increased by 14.5 percent in February to 94,900 units and single urban starts were up by 3 percent to 66,100 units.
