Evraz may construct power plant for Highveld

The South African steelmaker Highveld Steel and Vanadium (Highveld), a subsidiary of the Russian steel producer Evraz Group (Evraz), is planning to submit a proposal to Evraz for the construction of a cogeneration power plant.

The new power plant would use gas generated inside the Highveld plant for the production of electricity.

Evraz CEO Alexander Frolov has stated that the proposal is currently under consideration at Highveld.

Self-sufficiency in electricity supplies has become an important issue for the South African steel mills since earlier this year when power shortages in the country resulted in production losses. Mr. Florov confirmed that Highveld also incurred production losses because of the power outages this year.
