Duferco to improve its slab production

Swiss-based group Duferco is planning to upgrade its integrated works at Carsid in the coming months in order to improve group's slab and plate capacity in Belgium. In order to increase slab supply to group's Belgian plate operation Clabecq, company, investing €20 million, will upgrade the caster downstream of the blast furnace of the slab mill and instal a vacuum oxygen degassing (VOD) unit. The officials of the company state that Carsid, a joint venture between Arcelor and Duferco located in Belgium, will keep its annual production which is around 1.9 million tons and the project aims to improve the slab size from current 1.600 mm to 1.850 mm for plate rolling. Hence, Clabecq will be able to substitute annual 300'000 tons of slab which it purchases from Arcelor's Dunkirk operation.
