Corus plans huge investments for plants in South Wales

The Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus plans to make huge development and expansion investments in Port Talbot and Llanwern plants in order to gain competitiveness against many other European steel producers and edge among major European producers. These investments for the next year are reportedly worth over £100 million ($176.4 million). After the completion of these investments, annual production capacity at its Port Talbot plant is planned to reach 4.7 million tons, with excess production procured to rolling mills at Llanwern. Besides, the galvanizing capacity is aimed to increase at Llanwern. Although the productivity improved at the aforecited plants since last year's investments and 2004 is promising, it is concerned that the market conditions which are expected to be pretty unstable next year will affect the success of investments.
