Corus applies for mining license

Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus applied for a license to develop part of the Margam coal field at its Port Talbot steel works in south Wales in an attempt to supply raw material to Port Talbot, which currently depends on imported coking coal. The Margam mine is owned by the state-run Coal Authority. If Corus gets the license, it will conduct feasibility study on how the mine could be developed. Sources report that Corus is also looking for other mining alternatives, including Norway's biggest iron ore mine.
