Coal exports from PWCS down 4.4 percent in 2017

Coal exports from Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 9.24 million mt in December last year, increasing by 10.2 percent compared to November, according to the company's announcement. 12 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals in December was coking coal.

According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in December, with shipments to Japan accounting for 54.7 percent of total shipments, while coal exports to Taiwan made up 18.1 percent of the total. 

Meanwhile, coal exports from PWCS terminals in 2017 declined by 4.4 percent year on year to 104.6 million mt.

PWCS accounts for one third of Australia's exports of coal, which is the country's second most important export commodity in terms of value.
