Chilean highest court, the Corte Suprema (Supreme Court), has allowed local iron ore and steel producer CAP Mineria to build a port in Cruz Grande, in the north region of Chungungo.

The project will be located near another iron ore-related project, the Dominga iron ore project. Currently, Chilean copper and iron ore producer Andes Iron seeks to reverse a ban on a $2.5 billion iron ore project known as Dominga, which is near CAP Mineria’s Cruz Grande port. CAP Mineria expects to invest $250 million in the port, which will be able to handle 13.5 million mt per year of iron ore.

CAP Mineria’s port project was approved at different levels. It was first allowed by an environment authority in 2015, then by a committee of ministers, and more recently, in 2017, it went to the Supreme Court.

Environmental groups that opposed the Dominga iron ore project also unsuccessfully tried to annul CAP’s port by filing appeals.
