Canadian housing starts rise in September after August slump

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced Tuesday that housing starts jumped from 191,900 units in August to 205,900 units in September.

As usual, urban starts represented the majority of overall housing starts, totaling 185,900 units in September, an 8 percent increase compared to August. Multiple urban starts were up by 14.2 percent to 118,000 units, while urban single starts fell by 1.5 percent in September to 67,900 units.

Rural starts were about 20,000 units in September, up from 18,900 units in August.
