Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) plans to expand its Casa de Pedra mine, according to a media report. Casa de Pedra is an open pit mine located in the city of Congonhas, in Minas Gerais state.
CSN will invest BRL 1.4 billion to build two “itabirite” plant out of its existing Casa de Pedra iron ore mine. The product is a quartzite containing micaceous hematite, and has a lower Fe content.
The first itabirite plant should start-up by 2021 and should reach a capacity of 10 million mt/year by 2023. The second plant should produce 20 million mt/year by 2026, and its start-up is expected for 2024. Currently, the project is at an “engineering phase.”
