Norwegian decarbonized steel developer Blastr Green Steel is planning to set up a new DRI plant with a green hydrogen production facility on an over 200-hectare site in Inkoo, Finland.

According to the company, the plant in question will have an ultra-low carbon steel production capacity of 2.5 million mt per year. Blastr stated that the environmental impact assessment and the necessary studies will be completed by the spring of next year, and that the pre-feasibility studies are about to be done.

As SteelOrbis reported earlier, Blastr had signed a strategic framework agreement back in July this year with US-based Cargill Metals to accelerate the decarbonization of the steel value chain. Under the given agreement, Cargill will supply iron ore for the company’s pellet plant producing feedstock for the Inkoo steel plant, and will undertake purchase and sale of ultra-low carbon steel products and logistics. This value chain is expected to reduce Scope 1-3 carbon emissions per mt by more than 90 percent compared to conventional steel production.
