ArcelorMittal France, a subsidiary of Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal, has announced that it is building a ladle furnace at its Fos-sur-Mer plant, located near Marseille.

Construction works are in progress, while some elements, such as the three electrodes which will convey the electrical power necessary to heat liquid steel, are already constructed.

The investment of €73 million will enable the company to reduce Fos-sur-Mer plant’s carbon footprint by 10 percent by increasing the share of recycled steel in the process significantly by 2025. In addition, the commissioning of the electric arc furnace, which will be completed by 2030, will bring the carbon reduction to 35 percent. The company aims to achieve zero emissions by 2050.
