UK-based mining giant Anglo American plc (Anglo American) has announced its decision to begin a divestment process for its Callide thermal coal mine in Central Queensland, Australia.

According to a company release, the strategy for Anglo American's metallurgical coal business, based in Australia, is to focus on growing its metallurgical coal and high margin export thermal coal businesses.

The Callide mine, which has a local sales base, produced 8.8 million mt of thermal coal in 2009 and has expansion potential from its resource base of more than 1 billion mt.
