Acciaierie d’Italia, currently under Extraordinary Administration, has confirmed that discussions with Baku Steel Company, Jindal Steel International, and Bedrock Industries are ongoing “in a constructive climate”, with the aim of defining solid, sustainable, and long-term industrial solutions. A central issue remains the position of local authorities regarding the proposed regasification terminal considered essential for the launch of a DRI plant and a crucial step toward decarbonization.
As previously reported by SteelOrbis, following the pre-selection phase in January, discussions have shifted focus from the initial engagement to the environmental and infrastructure conditions necessary to ensure the long-term viability of the site. In this context, the regasification terminal has emerged as a critical component in unlocking the strategic plan.
Italy’s Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, has convened a meeting with trade unions for Monday, July 7, followed by a marathon session on July 8 at the ministry (MIMIT), involving regional and local authorities. The goal is to finalize an inter-institutional Program Agreement and facilitate the issuance of a new Integrated Environmental Authorization (AIA).
According to Radiocor sources, the decision-making process could extend to July 10, with the final conference of services on the AIA scheduled for that day, while the meeting on July 7 will be dedicated to discussions with unions.
For now, negotiations are ongoing and all potential buyers remain in the game. However, the debate around strategic infrastructure is becoming increasingly central to the restructuring process. The upcoming meetings between the government, the Apulia region, local authorities, and unions are expected to play a crucial role in defining the future of the former Ilva plant and in laying the groundwork for a sustainable and widely supported industrial plan.
