Spot market prices for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume coil have continued to inch upward in the past seven days, as prices have nudged up $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) on the top end of the previous spot range.
Current prices for base-price US domestic HDG coil, which had previously been heard at $39-$40 cwt. ($860-$882/mt or $780-$800/nt), ex-mill, are now being heard in the approximate range of $39-$41 cwt. ($860-$904/mt or $780-$820/nt), ex-mill.
Buyers continue to report they are being cautious with order placement, and continue to keep all eyes on the pending announcement in the Section 232 case. Although the investigation is being hailed by US domestic steel mills, others point out that implementing “heavy tariffs or excessively restrictive import tonnages will cause the cost of manufactured goods to go through the roof.”
There is also added concern that an affirmative finding in the Section 232 case could lead to increased global tariffs against American exports; at current, some European counties have said they are exploring the possibility of a “Carbon tax” against US goods, as a result of the US having abandoned the Paris accord.
