Workers at Peruvian’s only iron ore producer start “indefinite” strike

About 1,053 workers at Peruvian’s only iron ore producer, Shougang Hierro Peru, started an “indefinite” strike Monday.

According to a local union, the workers are asking for better wages. All Shougang’s operations are currently halted, said Julio Ortiz, sub-secretary at a local union.

Iron production output at Peruvian’s only producer, Shougang Hierro Peru, declined 0.88 percent in July, year-on-year. Despite growing in the year-on-year comparison, the country’s iron ore production declined 11.6 percent in the month-on-month analysis, reaching 646,275 mt, according to recent government data. Peru produced 4.85 million mt in the January-July period, 0.4 percent up, year-on-year, according to official figures.
