Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine AG has announced that its supervisory board approved an investment of around €1.5 billion to construct one electric arc furnace at each of its two sites, Linz and Donawitz.

As part of Voestalpine’s decarbonization plan, the construction of the electric arc furnaces will start in 2024, and they will be commissioned in 2027, reducing the company’s carbon emissions by up to 30 percent, as SteelOrbis previously reported.

The two electric arc furnaces will have an annual production capacity of around 2.5 million mt of carbon-reduced steel, with 1.6 million mt in Linz and 850,000 mt in Donawitz.
